K9 Program

Merrimack County Department of Corrections began its Canine Program through a Department of Justice grant in May of 2017 and welcomed K9 Mack, a Belgian Malinois. Through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) and North American Police Work Dog Association, K9 Mack is certified to find Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Heroin, Cocaine and Smokeless Gun Powder.

Mack is utilized to:

  • Search for narcotics and other forms of contraband
  • Tracking or searching for escapees or missing persons
  • Respond to a variety of emergency situations that may arise in a correctional setting
  • Routine patrol of the facility and its grounds
  • Public demonstrations
  • Assist local DARE programs at schools

K9 Mack and his handler, Erica Cushman, get recertified yearly in narcotics detection and complete maintenance training with the USPCA. If you are interested in K9 Mack doing a demonstration for your event, class, seminar etc. you can contact K9 Coordinator Erica Cushman at ecushman@mcdoc.net or 603-796-3669.
